The ancient town of Bolgheri is situated in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci (Province of Livorno). It spreads out over the hills and the strip of coast running from San Vincenzo to Cecina, along the area of the Tuscan coast which was under the dominion of the Etruscans in ancient times, and which has an age-old wine growing history.

A count of the aristocratic Gherardesca family founded the town on the site of an older settlement and castle which had been destroyed in 1393. He gave a new impulse to the local economy from the 16th century on, making the area one of the most fertile and productive zones along the coast.
